Real Madrid Turning Up the Heat

If you haven’t been paying attention to La Liga (Spain’s top flight of football) in the past couple of weeks, you have missed some scintillating performances. With five weeks left on the calendar, the race for the title has heated up with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla all in contention for the title. The Galaticos of Madrid were seemingly out of it just a month ago, with heavy criticism coming from all corners.

However, in the past couple of weeks the Madristas have turned up the intensity. Inspired by the “dinosaurs” of the club (Raul, Guti, Van Nistelrooy, Beckham, Roberto Carlos), the club is arguably playing the best football in Europe right now and is making a stirring run at its first title since 2002-03. They battled Sevilla in a thriller last week, winning 3-2, and came back against Espanyol today to win at the Bernabeu 4-3. Down two goals in the 2nd half, Madrid played electric football and shook the stadium with its sparkling play from the veterans and newcomers like Higuain.

Here’s the game-winning goal by Higuain (and the entertaining celebration by the players and fans afterwards):

With two wins in the past two weeks, Madrid now sit atop La Liga, one point clear of 2nd place Barcelona.

1. Real Madrid – 34 games played, 66 points, GD +21
2. Barcelona – 33 games played, 65 points, GD +34
3. FC Sevilla – 34 games played, 64 points, GD +27
4. Valencia – 33 games played, 59 points, GD +15

This is turning into one of the most exciting races of the European season so make sure to keep following the rest of La Liga to see who ends up with the title. The onus is now on Barcelona to perform tomorrow after getting crushed 4-0 against Getafe in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
